Where is West Quoddy Station?

West Quoddy is the Easternmost point in the Continental U.S., the most Northern coastal point in Downeast Maine in the Bay of Fundy, the best of the “Bold Coast.” Overlooking the islands of Campobello and Grand Manan in New Brunswick, Canada, West Quoddy Head is in the town of Lubec, north of Machias, east of Eastport and south of Calais, Maine.

Driving directions?

At the intersection of U.S. Rt 1 and State Rt 189, you are 15 Miles from West Quoddy Station. On Rt 1, just before this intersection, there are brown State of Maine signs: “Quoddy Head State Park” & “FDR Campobello.” Turn RIGHT onto 189, following the signs to “Quoddy Head State Park.” From this intersection it is 10 miles to the next sign, where you turn RIGHT and go 5 miles– after driving 4 miles, there is another sign “Quoddy Head State Park” where the road turns wicked to the LEFT onto Quoddy Head. Our address is: 823 South Lubec Rd., Lubec, ME 04652. Turn LEFT into our driveway, and drive past the meetinghouse to our parking lot.

How long does it take to get there?

In terms of pure driving time, West Quoddy Head is 2 1/2 hours from Bangor, 4 hours from Portland, 6 hours from Boston, 10 hours from NYC. Be sure to allow for additional hours/time for meals, gas, and rest stops. The nearest commercial airport is in Bangor, 2 ½ hours.

What is there to do?

Relax and enjoy the Bold Coast of Maine. Choose from lighthouses, photography, hiking, bicycling, kayaking, birding, , whale watching, puffin boat trips, beaches, sea glass, art, music, museums and more! In less than 10 minutes, you can be on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada and visit Roosevelt International Park. Please be aware that Campobello is in the ATLANTIC TIME ZONE, which is 1 hour ahead of (later than) Maine, USA. EXAMPLE: 1PM US=2PM CA. A Passport- Book or Card- is required to return to the U.S.A.

Which lighthouses are nearby?

West Quoddy Light and the Channel Light are in Lubec, East Quoddy Light and Mulholland Light are across the International Bridge on Campobello Island. Little River Lighthouse, in Cutler Harbor, Maine, requires a boat trip. Whitlock Mills Light is below Calais, Maine.

What is your cancellation policy?

Refunds ‘on your deposit” are given up to “24 hours before check in.”

For deposits made with a credit card, a 10% banking fee will be charged.

Do you allow pets?

Yes, pets are welcome as they usually are good traveling companions and arrive with a caring owner. We ask that you bring a bed for your pet and keep it off the beds and sofa, and bring covering for beds and sofa. Please clean and sweep up after your pet. This helps our housekeeping staff and the subsequent guests.  Pet Fee $15/night, $50/week

How about smoking and fires?

NO SMOKING or candles in the buildings. Also, there are no fireplaces or woodstoves. There are 4 grills; 3 propane, 1 charcoal, Please Ask. A firepit is located at The Picnic deck.

Can you go swimming?

The locals answer this question with a laconic “why?” The water is cold, with currents up to 15 knots and an extreme 20’ tide change twice a day. The beaches are perfect for fine views, picking up sea glass and other beachcombing. A 5 minute walk (half mile) down the road, there is access to a beautiful, horseshoe-shaped, mile-long, sandy beach. PS. In summer, the locals go inland to their lake camps—“goin’ upta camp.”

What do I need to cross the border into Canada?

Since June 2009, a PASSPORT BOOK or PASSPORT CARD is required to travel between the USA and Canada ie: Lubec, Maine-Campobello Island, New Brunswick. For an expedient and pleasant crossing experience, please consider a smile, no hat and no sunglasses. CHILDREN UNDER 18 NEED A BIRTH CERTIFICATE OR PASSPORT IF TRAVELING WITH BOTH PARENTS, WHILE A SINGLE PARENT NEEDS A NOTARIZED RELEASE FROM THE OTHER PARENT. Current vaccination papers are required for pets. You will be asked the purpose of your visit, where you live, where you are staying, and if you have tobacco, firearms, alcohol or any gifts or goods that you will be leaving in Canada. Local border crossings are at Lubec/Campobello and Calais/St. Stephen.

Where can I eat?

There is a good choice and variety of restaurants in the village of Lubec (5 miles) and on Campobello Island. Lubec has a well-stocked supermarket and a convenience store, each with a deli department. Beer, wine and liquor are sold 7 days a week.
