Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve gathered the most common questions to make your stay at West Quoddy Station as smooth as possible.

  • West Quoddy is the easternmost point in the continental U.S., the northernmost coastal point in Downeast Maine, located in the Bay of Fundy, and the best of the 'Bold Coast.' Overlooking the islands of Campobello and Grand Manan in New Brunswick, Canada, West Quoddy Head is in the town of Lubec, north of Machias, east of Eastport, and south of Calais, Maine.

    The GPS coordinates are: 44° 49' 4" N latitude / 66° 57' 56" W longitude.

823 South Lubec Road, Lubec, Maine 04652

  • At the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and State Route 189, you are 15 miles from West Quoddy Station. On Route 1, just before this intersection, you’ll see brown State of Maine signs for "Quoddy Head State Park" and "FDR Campobello." Turn RIGHT onto Route 189 and follow the signs for "Quoddy Head State Park." From this intersection, it is 10 miles to the next sign, where you’ll turn RIGHT and continue for 5 miles. After driving 4 miles, you’ll see another "Quoddy Head State Park" sign, where the road curves sharply to the LEFT onto Quoddy Head.

Our address is 823 South Lubec Road, Lubec, ME 04652. Turn LEFT into our driveway and continue past the meetinghouse to reach our parking lot.

  • In terms of pure driving time, West Quoddy Head is 2.5 hours from Bangor, 4 hours from Portland, 6 hours from Boston, and 10 hours from New York City. Be sure to allow extra time for meals, fuel, and rest stops. The nearest commercial airport is in Bangor, 2.5 hours away.

  • Relax and enjoy the beauty of Maine’s Bold Coast. You can explore lighthouses, photography, hiking, bicycling, kayaking, birding, whale watching, puffin boat trips, beaches, sea glass hunting, art, music, museums, and much more! In less than 10 minutes, you can reach Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada, and visit Roosevelt International Park.

Please note that Campobello is in the Atlantic Time Zone, which is 1 hour ahead of (later than) Maine, USA. For example, 1 PM in the U.S. is 2 PM in Canada. A passport book or card is required to re-enter the U.S.

  • West Quoddy Light and the Channel Light are located in Lubec, while East Quoddy Light and Mulholland Light are just across the International Bridge on Campobello Island. Little River Lighthouse, situated in Cutler Harbor, Maine, requires a boat trip to visit. Whitlock Mills Light is located south of Calais, Maine.

  • For current tide and sunrise/sunset times, visit: me.usharbors.com/monthly-tides/Maine-Downeast/Lubec. Tide tables are also posted on the bulletin board in the Lodge building.

  • Yes, pets are welcome as they are often great traveling companions and usually arrive with a caring owner. We ask that you bring a bed for your pet and keep it off the beds and sofa. If needed, please bring coverings for the furniture. We also kindly request that you clean up after your pet to help our housekeeping staff and ensure a pleasant stay for future guests. The pet fee is $15 per night or $50 per week.

  • Smoking and the use of candles are not permitted inside the buildings. Additionally, there are no fireplaces or woodstoves. We provide 4 grills: 3 propane and 1 charcoal—please inquire for details. A fire pit is available at the picnic deck.

  • Locals typically respond with a simple “why?” The water is cold, with currents up to 15 knots and an extreme 20-foot tide change twice a day. While the beaches are ideal for taking in scenic views, collecting sea glass, and beachcombing, swimming isn’t common. However, just a 5-minute walk (half a mile) down the road, you’ll find access to a beautiful, horseshoe-shaped, mile-long sandy beach.

P.S. In the summer, locals often head inland to their lake camps, or as they say, “goin’ upta camp.”

  • Since June 2009, a passport book or passport card is required to travel between the U.S. and Canada, including the Lubec, Maine–Campobello Island, New Brunswick crossing. For a smooth and pleasant border experience, it's helpful to smile, and avoid wearing a hat or sunglasses.

Children under 18 need a birth certificate or passport if traveling with both parents. A single parent must also provide a notarized release from the other parent. Current vaccination papers are required for pets.

At the border, you'll be asked the purpose of your visit, where you live, where you are staying, and if you're carrying tobacco, firearms, alcohol, or any gifts or goods you plan to leave in Canada. Local border crossings are at Lubec/Campobello and Calais/St. Stephen.

  • There is a good variety of restaurants in the village of Lubec, just 5 miles away, and on Campobello Island. Lubec also has a well-stocked supermarket and a convenience store, both with deli departments. Beer, wine, and liquor are available for purchase seven days a week.
